Flowerheart by Catherine Bakewell

Summary:

Clara’s magic has always been wild but never dangerous until her touch causes poisonous flowers to bloom from her father’s chest. As the one that caused the terrible magic, Clara is the only one that can heal him. However, doing so will require powerful magic and extreme control. The only person willing to help her is her ex best friend, Xavier, but there’s a price to pay. Xavier is not the boy she once knew and has secrets he’s unwilling to share. As Clara tries to save her father, she discovers the root of the terrible magic that’s been spreading and finds she may be able to help.

My Thoughts:

This book reminded me why I love the young adult genre so much. The writing and plot is a little on the simple side but still an enjoyable read.

It’s no secret that I’m fond of books that feature magic. The magic in this book was a delight to read. There’s something about the magic and the story as a whole that is reminiscint of innocence, wonder, and hope you experience in your youth.

The characters were well developed and exhibited growth that fit in line with the personalities established.

With that in mind, parts of the ending were a little darker than I expect. It was nothing over the top and fit well with the story. In fact, there parts of the ending that were wholly unexpected to me and I questioned exactly how the story would end.

This was genuinely a good read for me and one I could see myself picking it up again when I desire something calm and simple to read.
