Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
Summary:
Magic disappeared from Orisha years ago and the king had all maji (magic users) killed leaving Zelie without a mother. When a runaway princess enters the picture, Zelie may have a chance to bring magic back only if she can control her possible powers and her strange connection to the king’s son who is bent on eradicating magic.
My Thoughts:
I have so many mixed feelings about this book. Magic and possible enemies to lovers? Should be amazing right? Well, keep reading.
My initial emotion was annoyance because of the characters. I get that the character are young at 17 and that they may not make the smartest decisions. However, I really have a hard time connecting to the characters through the first half of the book. The author may have done this to show how each character develops but the jumps the characters make from beginning to end just do not seem to be realistic to me.
That brings me to the love interests in the book. I did not find the romance in the book to be that well developed. Maybe it is because I’m coming from reading a romance book before this but I found it hard to see where the characters actually fell in love. It just seemed to go from hatred to interest to love.
I did love the fantasy aspects of this book and the story kept me engaged enough to keep reading, especially towards the end of the book. The ending absolutely infuriated me so I will be reading the next book to find out what happens next.
I feel like the story had a lot going on and the world the author created is definitely interesting. Overall, I think there was just too much going on (I don’t think the alternating perspectives helped) to really fall in love with the book. I’m hoping the second book will change my feelings but I’m classifying this book as great but…you will need some patience when reading.
