Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
This book is about a pair of boys that just want to have fun. Jim Nightshade is a little more daring in his pursuit of adventure and Will Halloway likes to play it more on the safe side. Both see an opportunity for fun when a carnival comes into town and both quickly realize that there is something strange about the carnival, something dark. Both boys get swept up in a carnival that can age you or make you younger, make you see and feel things you never wanted to, and even trap your soul.
Something Wicked This Way Comes is a dark fantasy fiction novel written in a poetic style. There are times that it feels more like you’re reading a poem rather than a novel. However, the whole book isn’t written like one long poem or anything so if you don’t like poetry you still may like this book.
On the surface, this is a story about two boys and a carnival. On a deeper level this book talks about life in a lot of ways. What it’s like be young and growing up, to be older and aging, about good and evil and desire and regret. I love this book because it reminds me of fall nights that have an air of mystery and eeriness.
This is a great book but maybe not for everyone. Perfect for fall, you can take your time to enjoy this haunting story.
