Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi
Summary:
Zelie and Amari managed to bring back magic to Orisha. The problem is magic has returned not only to maji but also to nobles. Zelie must try to unite the maji in order to secure Amari on the throne for a change to change Orisha. Can she manage to unite anyone when hatred runs so deep?
My thoughts:
I have to say this story vastly improved from the first book.
I think one of the areas the author excelled in was how she wrote the aftermath of bringing magic back and how the war is affecting so many characters. What that looks like in their decisions and the consequences of those decisions.
Honestly, this series continues to infuriate me in that I still think the main characters are stupid and hugely flawed. Maybe it’s the alternating perspectives or the writing, I just find it hard to really fall in love with the main characters. Quick shout out to Roen, the only character I truly enjoy.
Additionally, some of the plot twists are quite predictable in my opinion. It makes for a good story but they are ones that I saw coming and I don’t feel I am particularly good at guessing what is going to happen in books.
That being said, I still continued to read and did not feel like it was a story I could not finish. By the end, I can say I am fully invested and looking forward to the third book which will hopefully be published later this year.
The second book was a good read but still not without it’s issues. 🙂
