Happy Place by Emily Henry

Summary:

Harriet and Wyn have been together since college and have had the same group of friends just as long. They ended things months ago and have yet to tell their friends. To keep from ruining a special week with their friends, they must pretend like they’re still in a relationship. Doing so brings up things from the past they still haven’t discussed and feelings they can’t forget. After the week is up, things will have changed forever.

My Thoughts:

This book was heavier in tone but one I enjoyed nonetheless. Emily Henry is definitely a talented writer. She was able to convey feelings of heartbreak and longing so effectively that I felt a ghost of those feelings while I was reading.

I love the friendships and relationships between the characters. The author did a wonderful job of showcasing how different personalities and life events can affect a relationship even going as far as to show how mental health and traumas affect them.

I didn’t appreciate the communication between the characters in this one. I understand the need for plot devices but didn’t particularly enjoy them in this story. In all fairness, everyone grows at their own pace but the lack of communication and not facing your inner traumas was not a favorite to read for what was presented. I felt like the traumas and growth faced fit better to a slightly younger demographic than the actual one presented by the author. Maybe it’s because I’ve seen it executed in novels targeted towards young adults?

Overall, this a great read if you’re a fan of Emily Henry and looking for a heartfelt novel just make sure you read the trigger warnings beforehand.
