Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki

Summary:

Shizuka Satomi only has one more soul to deliver to hell to be free. Enter Katrina, a transgender runaway, who may be the soul Shizuka has been searching for. But, when Shizuka meets Lan, an interstellar refugee, she sees things in a new light that may change the path she’s chosen.

My Thoughts:

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book mainly because of the poetic writing style. Each sentence and paragraph could be dissected and felt in so many different ways. Something to note is the unique descriptions that sometimes combined senses in uncommon ways. It may not be something people find makes sense or enjoy.

If you don’t find the writing beautiful or interesting, I think it may be hard to get through the novel. Because of the writing style, not much is hinted at with regard to the plot until at least halfway through the book.

On the surface this book is about a Queen of Hell, an alien, and a transgender human. At its heart, it’s a look into humanity, the meaning of life, and finding oneself.

This book is great but not for everyone. Such a unique read and one that I’m glad to have had the pleasure to come across.
