The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

Overview:

Kids who survived a disease now have strange abilities that they sometimes can’t control. They are sent to camps, basically prisons, where they are forced to live separated from the world and forced to keep their powers bottled up. The story follows Ruby, her time in the camps, and her eventual escape to the ruined world outside the camps.

My thoughts:

I hadn’t planned on reading this book but I had time to kill in a store and decided to pick it up. After leaving, I decided it was one I wanted to finish.

Ruby has the power to get inside people’s minds. She can see and influence people’s memories/thoughts. She has a very timid disposition at first, probably because of everything she’s been through, and believes her power is horrible and dangerous. I think some may find her character a little frustrating because she won’t stand up for herself and seems to think so little of herself but there is a certain strength to her character. She’s a survivor, she manages to live in a camp for years without displaying her strength or power. And even after she escapes, she chooses when to show her power.

Liam is a truly good guy with a good heart which may not be the best thing in the world they live in but automatically makes you love him. He genuinely wants to help everyone he can even though he’s just one person.

There is something in this book that I thought was too good to be true and I was right! That’s all I’m going to say on that.

The ending is a huge cliff-hanger but since it’s the first book, I’m okay with that. I do recommend having the second book handy after this first one though.

This book is a good read. It keeps you interested all the way through and is a fairly easy read.
