The It Girl by Ruth Ware
Summary:
April was the first person Hannah met at Oxford as her roommate. April brings Hannah into her circle and eventually becomes once of Hannah’s best friends. April is murdered that first year at Oxford. Ten years later, when the convicted killer dies in prison, possible new evidence comes to light and Hannah must decide if she can face everything that happened ten years ago.
My thoughts:
Ruth Ware and murder mystery go hand in hand in my opinion. This is my second book from her and I wasn’t disappointed. I listened to the audiobook for this and loved the accents.
The story almost immediately drew me in partly because of the alternating perspectives. The story goes from the time periods before and after the murder occurred ten years apart.
To be honest, I thought Hannah’s character could be a little dense at times which I think was just to add to the mystery of the whole thing.
Without that I think the story could have been told in half the time. Half way through I felt the story way dragging on and found that the book is 423 pages!
I think the story could have been just as good at half the length but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it. If attention to details are what make a story for you, I think you’ll enjoy the story especially with the audiobook.
I felt like the ending of the book was a tiny bit of a let down. Not because I guessed who the killer was, I’m horrible at guessing that. More so because the main closing scene was slightly cliche in the way it was told and because I was expecting to know more of Hannah’s life years down the line.
I think this was a great read but maybe not for everyone. If you’re a fan of murder mystery and Ruth Ware, you can’t go wrong. I think it will be enjoyable for those who are. For those who aren’t, have some patience.
